BUM RUSH THE CHARTS

So I found this pretty interesting and I will definitely be participating!

"On March 22nd, 2007 we are going to strike fear into the hearts of the music industry and make an independent music artist #1 on iTunes.

Podcasting gets little respect from traditional media. To them we're little more than a joke, than amateurs. What they don't understand is that podcasting is more than just a delivery mechanism - it's a social movement. People are growing sick of the watered-down, cookie-cutter content that networks and record companies expect us to enjoy. We want and deserve more. Big corporate media derives its power by having the
resources to mass market their product in a unified effort, which is why they think they're better than us. On March 22, 2007, we're going to give you a chance to change that.

A bunch of us podcasters started thinking, we can do better. We can match and exceed the reach of big media, corporate media, labels, and the entrenched interests. That's why, on March 22nd, the podcasting community is going to take an indie podsafe music artist to number one on the iTunes singles charts as a demonstration of our reach to Main Street and our purchasing power to Wall Street. The track we've chosen is "Mine Again" by the band Black Lab. A band, mind you, that was not just dropped from not just one, but two major record labels (Geffen and Sony/Epic) and in the process forced them to fight to get their own music back. We picked them because making them number one, even for just one day, will remind the RIAA record labels of what they turned their backs on - and who they ignore at their peril.

What's more, we're going to take it a step beyond that. We've signed up as an affiliate of the iTunes Music Store, and every commission made on the sale of "Mine Again" will be donated to college scholarships, partly because it's a worthy cause, but also partly because college students are among the most misunderstood and underestimated groups of people by big media.

If you believe in the power of new media, on March 22nd, 2007, take 99 cents and 2 minutes of your time to join the revolution and make iTunes "Mine Again". If you're a content producer (blogger, podcaster, etc.), we're asking you to join up with us and help spread the word to your listeners. Nothing would prove the power of new media more than showing corporate media that not only can we exceed their reach and match their purchasing power, but that we can also do it AND make a positive difference in the world. If we can succeed with this small example, then there's no telling what can do next.

For more details, come visit bumrushthecharts.com (bum rush the charts dot com) or send an e-mail to bumrushthecharts@gmail.com if you want to help out. It doesn't matter where you are or who you podcast with, we'd love to have you on board"

LA was great! Pretty much a very random weekend of events ranging from Stephen Baldwin buying me gum, the Oscars, partying Paul Allen's, meeting Axl Rose and hanging out with Karen from Jumpcut again! I mean, those are just the highlights (other than meeting groovr, of course) and pretty much all I'll leave you with. I hardly even took any photos. What is this world coming to?

Anyways, I need to catch up on sleep..

RADIOS

Weeee, Desiree and I have offically started our own PODCAST on talkshoe.com

Now, I wouldn't exactly advise listening to this because it's quite terrible (yet still humoring to us) but I'm going to post the link anyways.. Why not? We had the option of making it private but we don't like to keep secrets, really.

[ listen to our first learning talkshoe podcast ]

Our talkshoe profile is located [ here ]. We'll keep you posted on when we do decide to hold our first real podcast. Be sure to join our mailing list on our website because we will send out a reminder prior.

Secondly, I'm not longer a fan of 105.9 the X (a popular Pittsburgh radio station). Granted, they've been slowly going down hill for as long as I can remember but today they pretty much pushed me over the edge. If I ever turn that station on again, it will be purely accidental.

One of their DJ's who's name I won't mention (just kidding.. it was Grimm) went on a tirade of sexist remarks that I need not get into. I proceeded to call in and his closing remark to me was something to the effect of "..and this is why men should make decisions and not woman."

Wow.. Just wow. .

EVERYTHING YOU HATE ABOUT MYSPACE

Everything you hate about MySpace.com Virb.com fixes. Even in it's beta form, Virb just about covers every aspect of what a great Web 2.0 social networking site needs... and even a few "cute" things that aren't needed, but give the site that extra edge that most lack.

Unless today if your first day on the internet and you managed to make tastyblogsnack.com one of your first websites (thanks), you probably have a blog and are a member of flickr. Thankfully, Virb understands the importance of importing RSS feeds and soon they will allow you to do just that with your external blog and flickr photos. This is pretty important to most users and many sites are accidently neglecting. Can a website be too egotistical to allow for RSS integration from an outside source? Possibly.

If you've ever woke up in the middle of the night crying in a cold sweat from a nightmare, then you might know the feeling of what it's like attempting to customize your MySpace page. Virb is extremely customizable allowing beginners and CSS experts to dabble and test their design skills. The basic editor allows you to add change the organization of your layout and color scheme. With the advanced editor, you have free reign to design your own template. Also in a future update, they will have the option for you to save your themes for use at a later date. Beautiful.

The little things about Virb is what shows shining potential over most others. Fans of last.fm's iTunes or other audio player (there are others?) will love their virbtunes plugin, allowing you to publicize your mp3 plays over your profile. In their video player, there is a "cute" little lightbulb that will dim your browser screen to improve visibility. The Virb user homepage is neatly designed giving you quick access to all of your content, including friends, music, photos, blogs, groups and your settings to customize your profile. If you wish to browse user profiles with their default customization, they've added that option at the top of every page. Brilliant? Yes.

MySpace has been a great run for everyone on the social networking bandwagon, but it is time to move on. For a website that has been around over 4 years, it's almost impressive at how terrible it truly is. Most people are to the point that receiving errors isn't something out of the ordinary and it's just brushed off with a click somewhere else. Only on MySpace is that an accepted practice.

If you haven't heard, Britney Spears shaved her head and then ran out and got a pair of red and pink lips tattooed on her wrist. She might just be crazy, but with everything she's been going through since the release of her first album, I'm surprised it's taken this long.

I wanted to blog about how she's absolutely insane just as everyone else has been doing. I honestly feel bad for her. Granted, she's the one that put herself into celebrity status, but once you're in it, how do you get out? It almost makes me sad to look at these photos to see what's become of her. I can't even imagine how she must feel. No matter what she does, it's going to be blown up the next day in some tabloid or on the cover of some magazine with the truth stretched beyond belief.

PODCAST

While we were at the Treehouse, I called into Bill E and TT show about 20 minutes in and rambled about life, sandwiches and the internet. Also, Jesse took over the phone for awhile and talked about the upcoming event at the Creative Treehouse.

HAHAHAHA

I did manage to move all my posts over to Wordpress. I started working on a new theme for it but soon was sidetracked and I couldn't stand to look at that standard blue theme any longer. So, I quickly switched back to this one for the time being. The worst part is over though.

A few random thoughts before I head to bed:

- GeekRiot blog will be found at geekriot.tv
- I'll be in LA the 22-24. If I don't return home, blame the snow.
- Add groovr to your MySpace Page
- Add the Mommy Pack My Lunch comedy page to your MySpace

The end.

..and yes, there are times I have more meta data than actual content. Sorry.

HAPPY VALENTIMES DAY

Yep. Happy Valentimes Day. Is it just me, or do a lot of people not realize that it's tines?

Why is it that? I recall my old roommate saying Valentimes more than once. I guess I was too busy trying to breakout of my room when she would tie my door handle to the step banister with a USB cable to call her out on the mispronunciation of a holiday. True story.

Anyways, I hope you all had a great day of chocolate eating while watching online cupid parody videos. Desiree and I missed the boat on that one. Shoot..

PODCAST CRAZINESS

Tonight I invaded (sorry!) The Last Shot Podcast on Talkshoe, a SportsTalk show held every Monday. Tony, who is one of the hosts, made me a great liner that I linked in one of my previous entries. Well, little did I know that I mistyped the link and it didn't work. So, here's the intro he created for me.. it's pretty funny. Thanks again!

GeekRiot 2/11/07

[ listen here ]

Ah, this episode of GeekRiot was pretty entertaining. I typically listen to net@nite prior to GR, but for some reason the internet decided to bail on me just as it began. I figured I'd take a quick nap before GeekRiot but I ended up sleeping way into the beginning of the show. So, feel free to listen as they stone me to death for being late. Surprisingly, we did manage to talk a little technology!

Oh, and why are we not friends on Groovr yet?

SNAKES ON A NECK

IMG_0213.jpg

[ view more snake photos on flickr ]

At lunch today we were all sitting and waiting for our food. Someone noticed that there was a man walking down the street with a huge 7 foot yellow python curled around his neck. Naturally, Desiree and I raced over to him with camera in hand.

We ran over to the man and he handed Merlin (the snake) over into my arms. Merlin kept "sniffing" me and slowly wrapping himself around my neck. My only thoughts were to try and keep his little face away from me, negleting the fact that he could just strangle me at any point if he so chose to do so.

I always thought I'd be reluctant to hold one of these creatues, especially since I never have previously. As he was getting his face closer and closer to mine I did get a little nervous. It's very hard to tell how an animal might react to someone. I have no prior experience with the mannerisms of snakes. Surprisingly, I fell in love with this little guy. He was so loving!

Someone left me a MySpace comment a long time ago on my "Snakes On A Plate" video that said something to the effect of "You look like someone that would be afraid of a real snake". I'll fight you.

As a side note, there is a law attempting to be passed in Florida if you own a snake that is more than 2 inches in diameter, you must have a high-tech identification tag implemented into it's body. This is to cut down on owners releasing them into the wild where they can be a danger to other wildlife and people. At least this way they will know who's responsible for letting it free.

We miss you, Merlin. If the random man would have taken credit, I would have bought you :(

Then again, if I did purchase him.. there is the matter of taking him on the plane?

GUTTING FISH

Ahh, today I gut (gutted?) a fish at the pier after dinner. It was tasty. Too bad I had already eaten..

[ view more flickr photos from the pier ]

I'm starting a new section of mommypackmylunch.com. It's going to be called Mommy Pack My Lunch TV. We'll be "broadcasting" live from different locations etc. The main site will still be just for the sketch type videos. The TV section could be promising. I'll have a quick video up there tomorrow. I'll blog it. No worries.

Time for bed. We're leaving Tuesday and I'm going to be so sad. I do not want to even think of returning to Pittsburgh. It just might be the biggest nightmare ever. Aghh.

On the upside, the day we get back there's a podcamp meetup and next weekend I believe they'll be filming here in Pittsburgh for Macbreak. Then at the end of the month I'll be in LA for a few days. In between there are a few other random things, but I can't blog all of my secrets, now can I?

ANNA

There's a handful of things I want to discuss tonight: Anna Nicole Smith, my headache, text messages, and Fall Out Boy. Welcome to my blog.

ANNA

As tragic as it is, I hope Anna Nicole Smith's death will teach everyone a lesson that garbage weight loss pills are not a good idea. I don't care what anyone says, TrimSpa is going to be paying a pretty penny to keep this one quiet.

I found this quote and couldn't help but share. This is from Anna Nicole's interview with CBS regarding her weight loss while on TrimSpa.

“That really shrinks your stomach. It really shrinks until you can’t eat much and you’re not hungry. So, I’ve had to taper off the pills. I take like two a day now. I don’t take six a day anymore. It’s really hard to eat, because, for me, it’s like I’ve lost my appetite. So I have to really, really push myself to eat.”

Oh that's awesome. I'm done with this subject. Enough said.

TEXTING HEADACHE

Today while napping to rid myself of a migraine.. I tried to remember the last time a minute had gone by that I didn't receive a text message. The constant sound/vibration of getting text messages today drove me to the point of ripping the battery out of my Treo so I could nap in peace.

Sitting here now thinking of how angry I was about not being able to just 100% shut my phone off, is pretty funny. I suppose my reaction was appropriate though.

Back to my entire life revolving around texting. I do love it, so let's not get the wrong idea here.

It's funny how spell check thinks texting is spelled wrong. Stop that!

FALL OUT BOY

Tonight Desiree and I were watching Jimmy Kimmel Live. We discussed how much she doesn't like Fall Out Boy and I tried to convince her that I like them. I've tried pretty hard in the past to not be a fan, but they just have some catchy beats that I can't help enjoying.

Well, that was before I saw their live performance tonight. The crowd was going crazy. Cheering, chanting and singing the lyrics to one of the worst live shows I have ever seen televised. It seemed as thought they were saying:

"Look how terrible our new songs are and look at you fools eating it up and buying our CD" Love, Fall Out Boy

Thanks guy. I look forward to hearing your CD that I illegally download.

I mean, what.. just kidding. I buy all of my music from the wonderfully amazing iTunes Music Store.

IMG_0068.jpgIMG_0087.jpgIMG_0018.jpgIMG_0033.jpgIMG_0076.jpgIMG_0080.jpgIMG_0048.jpg

Ahh, today was just awesome! I'm officially learning to surf!!! If you can't tell, I'm very advanced and soon I'll be ready for my first competition.

We spent most of the day at the beach today and had plans to create a new video, but opted to just enjoy the beach instead. Although, we did film a video for Rex (the Yahoo Talent Show winner) telling him how much we miss him. He's awesome.

On that note, we're also going to be visiting the Renzhe Parkour ninjas this weekend (they're from Florida)! They are such an awesome group of guys. I can't wait to see them again.

Lastly, Desiree and I called into Bill Alexander's podcast tonight. I'm really not even going to bother typing out the details because you'll just have to listen to the craziness. I'll be posting it tomorrow. Tony from thelastshotpodcast.com created an AMAZING one liner intro for me [ listen here ]
